| Graduated from the St. Petersburg Naval Cadet School, then studied at the Academy of Arts (1860-63) and under Jean Leon Gerome in Paris (1864-66). Lived and worked in St. Petersburg, Munich, Paris and Moscow, taking part in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78) and travelling extensively, to Central Asia (1867-68, 1869-70), India (1874-75, 1882-83), Palestine (1883-84), northern Russia (1887-88, 1894), the USA (1888-89, 1891, 1902), the Philippines and Cuba (1901-02) and Japan (1903). Numerous one-man exhibitions from 1873, in London, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Paris, Berlin, New York and other cities around the world. | ||||||
