| Studied in the drawing school of M. Rayevskaya-Ivanova in Kharkov and under J. Lorain and J. Benjamin-Constant at the Academie Julian in Paris (1897-98), then at the St. Petersburg Academy under Pavel Kovalevsky (1898-1907). Founder of the society Knave of Diamonds (1911) and member of the World of Art. Participant in exhibitions from 1903: Moscow Fellowship of Artists (1903,1905, 1911), New Society of Artists (1907-09), Salon d'Automne (Paris, 1908, 1910), Salons of Golden Fleece (1909-10), Salon des Independents (Paris, 1910-12), Knave of Diamonds (1910-14), World of Art (1911-12, 1915-22), Union of Youth (1911), Being (1926-27) etc. In the 1920s his works were shown in Tokyo and are now to be found in Japanese collections. Lived in Moscow. Taught at the Svomas (1918-21) and VKhUTEMAS (1926-29). In 1947 elected Member of the USSR Academy of Arts. | ||||||
