Studied in the law faculty of Moscow University (1886-92), then in the studio of F. Stuck and at Anton Azbe's school in Munich (1897-99). Participant in exhibitions from 1901 (?). Member of various associations: Phalanx (founding member and president, 1901-04), Die Neue Kunstlervereinigung (Munich,1909), Der Blaue Reiter (founding member, Munich and Berlin, 1911-13). Exhibited with Knave of Diamonds (1910, 1912), Donkey's Tail (1912), World of Art (1921 ). Created the first abstract works in 1910. Published the thesis On the Spiritual in Art (1912-13). Taught in the school of the Phalanx group in Munich (1902-04), at the Svomas in Moscow (1918-21), and at Moscow University (1920). In 1918 worked in the Fine Arts Department of Narkompros, member of the International Bureau. In 1919 appointed director of the Museum of Pictorial Culture in Moscow. From 1920 member of INKhUK, in 1921 vice-president of the Russian Academy of Artistic Sciences. In 1921 sent by Narkompros to teach at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, where he was professor from 1921 to 1933. |
