| Studied under Yuri Pen in Vitebsk (1906), in the school of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (1907-08), under Leon Bakst in EIizaveta Zvantseva's school of drawing and painting in St.Petersburg (1908-10) and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris (1910). Participant in exhibitions from 1910: Salon des Independents (1912-14) and Salon d'Automne (1912) in Paris, World of Art (1912), Donkey's Tail (1912), Target (1913), The Year 1915, Knave of Diamonds (1916,1917), Exhibition of Contemporary painting (1916-18), international exhibitions in Berlin (1913) and Amsterdam (1914), exhibition of Russian art in Berlin (1922) etc. First of many one-man shows in Berlin in 1914. His works were shown in Japan in 1963 (Tokyo, Kyoto) and 1989-90 (Tokyo, Kasama, Nagoya). Lived in Vitebsk, St.Petersburg, Moscow, Berlin, New York and Paris (1910-14, 1923-41, from 1948). Lived for a time in the artist's colony, La Ruche, in Montparnasse, joining the group of artists who were to form l'Ecole de Paris. After the Revolution appointed Commissar for the Arts in Vitebsk (1918-20), where he founded a museum and a Free painting Studio in which he himself taught. | ||||||
